Credit plans charge per generation, so every retry draws from the balance. Unlimited plans cover named models for a set period, with queue, resolution, and duration terms that vary by platform. A flat plan may become more cost-effective once the cost of retries exceeds the price of the plan itself. Most services sell one model or the other; hybrid subscriptions combine both. How Credit Plans Work in AI Video
Credits are the default billing model in AI video generation: a plan includes a monthly pool, and each generation deducts a portion of it. The size of that portion depends on several factors at once:
- Model. Flagship models draw credits several times faster than budget lines on the same plan.
- Duration and resolution. A 1080p render can cost three to four times the 720p rate, and longer clips scale the price per second.
- Audio. Some models price native audio on top of the base rate, while others include it, so the same clip length can cost differently with sound.
- Retries. On many platforms a failed or unusable take deducts the same credits as a keeper, so attempts count toward the budget.
Two more rules shape the monthly budget. Subscription credits usually reset at the end of each billing cycle without rollover, and purchased top-ups carry their own expiry dates. This is why the practical unit of cost is one usable clip, which in our own testing typically takes three to five generations to land.
A common way to reach $150 a month is holding two or three credit subscriptions at once, one per stage or model. Here is what such a stack buys, at each platform's published rates:
Tool | Monthly price | Credits | One generation | Usable clips at 3 to 5 attempts |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Luma Pro | $90 | 40,000 | Ray 3.2, 5s 1080p: 400 credits | 20 to 33 |
Runway Pro | $35 | 2,250 | Gen-4.5, 5s: 60 credits | 7 to 12 |
Kling Pro | $37 | 3,000 | Shown at generation time | Varies by model and mode |
The total is $162 across three separate balances, and the stack yields roughly 27 to 45 usable clips a month, with any remainder expiring in each tool on its own schedule. A fuller breakdown of where credits go is in our guide to Why Your AI Video Credits Run Out Faster Than You Expect.
How Unlimited Plans Work in AI Video
An unlimited plan works the other way around: instead of deducting per generation, it opens flat access to named models while the plan or pass stays active. The structure differs by platform, and four patterns cover the current market:
- Relaxed or off-peak queue. Generation is uncapped but runs in a slower lane, often after fast credits are spent. Midjourney and Vidu work this way.
- Unlimited exports on credit generation. The generation itself stays credit-based; only downstream features are uncapped.
- A year-long set of named models. A fixed list stays credit-free for 365 days. Higgsfield and Magnific run this pattern.
- A window on the newest flagship. Days-long unlimited access to a specific model, renewable after expiry. Higgsfield sells these as windows and passes.
The category has been narrowing: Runway closed its Unlimited plan to new subscribers in June 2026, and Luma's current plans list per-second credit rates with no relaxed mode. What remains on the market is scoped by model list, duration, and queue, which is worth reading closely before comparing prices.
Credits or Unlimited: How to Compare the Cost
The comparison comes down to five steps:
- Count the usable clips you need per month.
- Multiply by your retry rate; three to five attempts per keeper is a common range.
- Price that number of generations in credits at your working model's rate.
- Compare the result with the flat price of a plan or pass that covers that model.
- Check where the coverage applies, including surface, resolution, and concurrency, before switching.
On Higgsfield's current rates, one Seedance 2.5 take at 8 seconds 1080p costs 72 credits, about $3.60. Applied to three load profiles:
Profile | Generations per month | Cost in credits | The flat alternative |
|---|---|---|---|
Light, up to 10 usable clips | 30 to 50 | $108 to $180 | Plan credits cover it; a pass adds little |
Regular, around 30 usable clips | 90 to 150 | $324 to $540 | A 3-day or 7-day pass on the working model costs less |
Heavy, 100+ usable clips | 300 to 500 | $1,080 to $1,800 | Passes and windows carry the iterations; credits go to finals |
The pattern holds across platforms: the more retries a workload generates, the sooner a flat period on the working model beats paying per attempt.
