Read camera motion | Academy

The monster is the obvious subject, but the useful test is the camera path. Can you describe how the camera gets from one view to the next, or does the edit skip the difficult part?

The camera whips upward, pushes toward the face, drops, and continues into an orbit. The whole path is visible.

Here the angle changes at the difficult point. We see both views, but not the movement that connects them.

Describe the route

Use physical verbs: push, rise, drop, orbit, whip, settle. If the best description is “the shot changes,” inspect the cut again.

Track one detail on the subject, such as a scar or sleeve, and one detail in the scene, such as the horizon or a light source. Both should move consistently as the viewpoint changes.

Check what each cut avoids

Pause at every cut and ask what the camera or subject would have had to do next. Cuts often hide problems at body crossings, sharp perspective changes, or moments when the scene needs more depth. One cut proves little; a repeated pattern is meaningful.

A long take is not automatically better. The question is whether the clip shows the movement or asks the edit to imply it.
