Where You Still Regenerate

Local editing has limits. A few kinds of changes affect more than one local area at once, which means they usually need a new source performance or a full regeneration rather than a targeted edit:

  • Changing the character's underlying action or performance. A different gesture, a different reaction, a different beat entirely, that's a change to the motion itself, not one region of the frame.
  • Changing the duration, pacing, or shot structure. Extending a shot, cutting it short, or restructuring how it moves from one beat to the next touches the whole clip, not a single element inside it.
  • Replacing an object with something a very different size or shape. The new object still has to move the way the original did, and a major mismatch in scale or shape breaks that fit.
  • Adding interactions that require new contact, movement, or occlusion. A hand picking something up that wasn't there before, a character stepping behind an object, these need new physical interaction the source footage never had.
  • Changing several connected elements across the entire frame at once. Once enough pieces are shifting together, camera, lighting, motion, and objects all at once, a full regeneration tends to hold together better than stacking several local edits on top of each other.
