To continue the worship of Xipe Totec—the Flayed Lord—after the Spanish conquistadors systematically suppressed the religion, a remote village constructed a subterranean temple deep within the jungle. As the centuries passed, increased exposure to the outside world and a growing dread of the sacrificial rites led to a dark betrayal. To sever ties with their past, the villagers trapped the last loyal worshippers and elders inside the temple, sealing the entrance to bury the tradition forever. Three hundred years later, in 1960 Mexico, rumors of untouched Aztec treasures have surfaced.
