Have you ever heard of Jerusalem Syndrome? It’s a psychological condition affecting tourists in Jerusalem who begin to believe they are the Messiah. The protagonist, Mark, is convinced he is Jesus and tries to convert others. He goes too far and, after committing arson at a nightclub, is placed in a psychiatric clinic instead of prison. His fate lies in the hands of Dr. Katz, a psychiatrist specializing in religious delusions. Katz must decide whether Mark is truly insane or pretending — a decision that determines whether he belongs in treatment or jail. Inside the clinic, Mark meets other patients who also claim to be Jesus: an Ethiopian, an American, a Ukrainian, and a self-proclaimed Prophet. They compete to prove who is the true incarnation of the Lord. Their influence spreads through the ward, gathering followers among vulnerable patients. Soon, a circle of “Apostles” forms, along with a “Virgin Mary” — women suffering from the same syndrome. Katz is a committed atheist in his 50s, increasingly haunted by aging, insomnia, and fear of death. Mark promises him healing and meaning if he believes. Skeptical at first, Katz begins to experience unexplained improvements after their conversations. Mark oscillates between madness and miracle: one moment healing with a touch, the next fighting another “Jesus” for spiritual authority. Each episode presents an ambiguous event that could be divine or coincidence. The viewer is left uncertain whether any of them possess real power or are simply lost minds searching for transcendence. The central question remains: will Katz believe in Mark or return him to the police? Can a modern Messiah exist in today’s world, or would he inevitably be diagnosed as insane?
