THE RIVER Based on a true story. When 22-year-old African man sees a job ad for a call center job in Thailand, he believes it's his ticket out of poverty. He says goodbye to his mother in Rwanda and flies to Bangkok full of hope. But the luxury hotel is a lie. The 7-hour drive into the jungle is a trap. By nightfall, he's crossing a river into Myanmar—surrounded by armed men with red-stained teeth and walkie-talkies. On the other side: a compound filled with hundreds of young victims, forced to run scams under threat of electric shock and death. Escape means death. Stay means slavery.
