Freedom Or Death - The Greek Fight Of Independence
Ελευθερία ή θάνατος" (Freedom or Death) was the uncompromising motto of the 1821 Greek War of Independence, symbolizing the revolutionaries' resolve to liberate themselves from centuries of Ottoman rule or die trying. This bloody conflict, supported by international "Philhellenes" and eventual intervention by the Great Powers, climaxed with the destruction of the Ottoman fleet at the Battle of Navarino. The successful revolution resulted in the international recognition of Greece as an independent sovereign state in 1830.
